Vasant Panchami - Saraswati Puja – 22 January 2018

Vasant Panchami & Saraswati Puja – 22 January 2018

22 January 2018, Monday, marks Vasant Panchami and Saraswati Puja. Vasant Panchami (sometimes spelt and pronounced Basant Panchami) is an important Hindu holy event that marks the beginning of the spring season in India and Nepal. Vasant or Basant (Sanskrit word) means spring. In some parts of India, it is a holiday. Panchami is the time, according to the Hindu calendar; Panchami is the ‘Panch’ 5th day (called Tithi) of the Hindu calendar per lunar (moon) observation (at Paksha, meaning fortnight). Panch (Sanskrit word) means five.

Mahurat (meaning occasion, time) for Saraswati Puja also falls today on Vasant Panchami. Vasant Panchami is also a day dedicated to Goddess Devi Saraswati.

It is celebrated in most of India and Nepal.

Apparently, the period - months of January, February and March are marked as very important for Indian students, academicians, higher studies etc. The examinations are just round the corner – mostly in March and April. Studies and preparation by students go out in full swing at this time-period. It signifies a critical time as a lot of the future admissions, career, competitiveness etc. depends on the academic marks-results.

Saraswati Puja Mantra is particularly good for those preparing for examination, studies course etc. for them to be able to concentrate and focus on studies better, to be able to grasp more knowledge, memorize, perform best etc. There are many Mantra for different purposes, such as, for studies, knowledge, academics, arts, enhancing intelligence, wealth etc. However, one of the main Saraswati Puja Mantra (Shloka) goes:

Ya kundendu tusharahara dhavala ya shubra vastravrita

Ya veena varadanda manditakara ya shweta padmasana

Ya Brahmachyut shankara prabhritir bhir deveh sada vandita

Saa maam paatu sarasvatee bhagavatee nihshesha jadyapaha

The basic meaning of the above Mantra is salutation, worship and call for to Goddess Devi Saraswati. It is a prayer, solicitation, request, plead to Goddess Saraswati for favorability, making conditions ripe for concentration (especially mentally), in the field of education, studies, also technology, science, music, arts,  etc, thereby enabling best result especially in examination, competition etc.  It is in a sense like meditation. The prayer also signifies to kill lethargy, laziness, mental ignorance etc.

Many of the schools, colleges, institutions etc in India and Nepal celebrate and host a small gathering-event-prayer ceremony on this occasion, at their respective premises.
