Shri Satyanarayan Vrat – 31 January 2018

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat – 31 January 2018

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat falls on the 31st of January 2018, Wednesday. Shri Satyanarayan Vrat is a holy Hindu religious event that is followed about once every month on Purnima (full moon). Vrat (Sanskrit word) means fasting. Though Shri Satyanarayan Vrat is not a gazette or a national or restricted holiday in India, but many devotees return home a little early in the evening post work/office and conduct prayers. They observe Vrat through the day.  Shri Satyanarayan Vrat and Puja are dedicated as devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu is also called Lord Narayan. He is regarded as the preserver of the universe, anti- destruction, security, embodiment of truth, destroyer of fear etc. There are several names (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu, such as, Bhairav (Lord of terror), Bhawesh (Lord of the world), Digambar, Devesh (Lord of the divines), Pashupati (Lord of all living beings, including animals), Shankara (provider of happiness) etc.

Some of the famous Shri Satyanarayan Temples in India are the Annavaram Satyanarayana Temple (Annavaram, Andhra Pradesh/ Telangana), Sri Satyanarayan Swami Temple (Bangalore, Karnataka), Satyanarayan Temple (Kapurthala, Punjab) and so forth.

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat is followed by devotees across the India region. Devotees observe fast through the day. They seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu for favorability in above causes (Para 2). Normally the Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Puja is done early in the morning or evening. There is a specific timing for the Puja. Items (normally smaller quantities) like milk, ghee, yogurt, honey, sugar etc are offered in Temples to Lord Vishnu. Prasad (Hindu holy sacred sweet) is made-cooked and offered as blessing to all. The devotees who sit in the Katha (longer duration prayer), must consume the Prasad (after the Katha) for best result-fruits of devotion to Lord Vishnu. A specific Kutha (like Mantra) is recited at temples or holy pure spots-locations like (a holy per Vaastu) Puja corner at home. Aarti chanting is also done. It involves lighting of a small fire by burning of small quantities of camphor or Kapur (light white solid flammable cube, like shape of a sugar cube, with a pleasant aroma) in front of the idol of Lord Vishnu, with a pleasing soothing fragrance of agarbutti (a think wooden stick covered with a coat of pleasant smell, usually used in religious ceremonies) etc.

This 31st of January, 2018 also marks the astronomical phenomena of lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan). It is also Super Moon on this day, where the moon appears ~14% bigger and 30% brighter, being closest to Earth. The timing for India viewing of Chandra Grahan is about 5:50pm to 8:41pm IST. Pregnant ladies are believed and advised to refrain from viewing the eclipse.
