Please check the exact Chandra (Moon) viewing date-time per your location.

The fast starts early in the morning on the full moon day (Purnima) and ends after viewing the moon (at night). Satyanarayan Pooja (prayer ceremony) is done. The moon (Chandra) is amongst the top prominent celestial body in the Navgrah (‘Nav’ means 9;  planets (Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Jupiter (Brahspati), Venus (Shukr), Saturn (Shani)), Ketu, Rahu, Moon (Chandra), the Sun (Surya)). Chandra is responsible for aspects on humans on Earth like mood, emotions, relationships like mother-child, pregnancy, etc. and blessings for wealth, health, child birth, wellbeing, success etc.

However, this 31st of January 2018, full moon (Purnima) also coincides with astronomical phenomena the lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan). It is believed and advised that pregnant ladies must not view the Chandra Grahan. Chandra Grahan, unlike solar eclipse (Surya Grahan) can be viewed with bare eyes. The approximate timing for the viewing is about ~5:50pm to ~8:41pm (all stages). It completely lasts for approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.

31st of January 2018 also accounts for super moon and red moon (rust color); super moon is a phenomenon that the moon is closest to the Earth (perigee) in its orbit around the Earth. The moon appears about 14% bigger and about 30% brighter. This triple phenomena is happening after 150 years.

The full moon (Purnima), blood moon (called so for the color of moon turning rust-reddish), and lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan) can be best viewed in a clear night sky (at above timings). It should be away from street lights, traffic, other illuminations etc.
