Sankashti Chaturthi – 3 February 2018

Sankashti Chaturthi – 3 February 2018

Sankashti Chaturthi is a holy Indian sacred event (auspicious day). It falls on the 3rd of February 2018, Saturday. Sankashti Chaturthi is also known-called as Sakat Chauth (in north India) and Sankatahara Chaturthi (Tamil Nadu). Sankashti (Sanskrit word) means liberation-relief from difficult times. Chaturthi means the 4th day (Tithi) per the Hindu calendar. The date-day (Tithi) is determined as per the Hindu lunar calendar. It is calculated according to the day after the full moon (Purnima), at the 4th day of the Krishna Paksha (waning (descending)) moon (dark lunar fortnight). Each Krishna Paksha lasts for ~15 days. The day is dedicated, devoted, in honor, in remembrance to Lord Ganesha. This occurrence that happens on Tuesdays is considered most auspicious and is called Angaraki Chaturthi.

Lord Ganesha (Lord of Good Fortune) [Ganesha is sometimes spelt-pronounced Ganesa] is amongst the most prominent deities in the Hindu religion and its belief system. Lord Ganesha has several different names. Lord Ganesha symbolizes prosperity, wisdom, wealth, fortune etc and its favorability - auspiciousness for the natives.

To mention a few prominent names of Lord Ganesha – Vinayak (remover of obstacles), Gajanand (Gaj means elephant), Ganapati (Gana means group of souls), Tarun (meaning ageless).

Lord Ganesha’s birthday is called Ganesha Chaturthi which comes in the Hindu month of Bhadra (which typically arises in Gregorian months-period August-mid September). Bhadra is also known-called as Bhadrapada. It is celebrated across India (especially and ardently in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu), Nepal, parts of Sri Lanka, and other Hindu communities in countries like Mauritius, the US, the UK, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname etc.
