Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti – 19 February 2018

19th of February 2018, Monday, marks the birth anniversary, celebration the commemoration of the great Maratha warrior, leader Maharaj Shivaji’s birthday, called as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti. Maharaj Shivaji was born on the 19th of February 1630, in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Maharaj Shivaji died around the 3rd of April 1680 (though some historians indicate as the 5th) due to a health ailment. Shivaji Maharaj was a pioneer and a revered leader in the fight to save his land, values, people etc from the invasion of the Mughals.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is a regional public holiday in the Indian State of Maharashtra only; though in the current times, most private sector offices remain functionally open. But most Government offices, schools, colleges, institutes etc remain closed in the State. Maharashtra is one of the most populous and the 3rd largest State of India in the modern day.

These chivalrous great fights and wars, spanning decades, were in the times and era of the Mughal leader Aurangzeb. Some of these are also referenced as the Deccan Wars. Deccan Wars basically refers the Maratha - Mughal wars. It is named Deccan as the land extended the vast area of Maharashtra, parts of the south India, called the Deccan plateau, covering several Indian States.

Shivaji Maharaj’s name was manifested from one of the most honored, powerful Hindu and Indian deity Lord Shiva, by his mother Jijabai.

Shivaji Maharaj was a noble leader. Though he was Hindu by religion, and later fought against the Mughal (Muslim) leaders on their India subcontinent quest, Shivaji Maharaj had many States under him with Muslim population-natives. He preached tolerance and respect for religions and living a life in harmony. In fact, more than religion, he fought for the people of the vast region, irrespective of their religion. In Shivaji Maharaj’s leadership, many warriors-soldiers, administrative personnel etc were Muslims too.

Shivaji Maharaj also protected women and their cause, and as an aspect - instructed his armies to leave women unharmed in battle and in normal course, including of the opponents-enemies.

Warrior, and later freedom fighters etc, tried their best to save the Indian subcontinent by invasion by several foreign attackers, conquerors etc. in history; yet, to date the Indian ancient literature, architecture, culture, values, Yoga, Vedic Astrology, Ayurveda and other systems, remain intact.

Shivaji Maharaj was patriotic, brave, heroic and started his endeavor at a very early young age of 16.

Shivaji Maharaj also once escaped from prison when he was captured by the Mughal leader Aurangzeb and kept fighting back.

A special quote for Shivaji Maharaj goes (on the Jayanti (Birthday) remembrance):

                Din – Dalitancha Kaiwari Janmla,

                Are Maja Raja Janmla,

                Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti Shubeccha.
