Chandra Darshan – 18 January 2018
Chandra Darshan – 18 January 2018
Chandra means the Earth’s moon; Chandra also mean ‘illustrious’ in Sanskrit. Darshan means the prospect to see, sight or view. Therefore, Chandra Darshan is a time of viewing-sighting of the moon at an opportune time in the month. Chandra Darshan is the 1st sighting. It is considered an auspicious period-time in the Vedic Astrology. Chandra Darshan considered very auspicious in Hinduism is the first day of moon viewing after the ‘no-moon’ (Tithi, within 12° angular distance between the Surya (sun) and the Chandra (moon)). No moon is also called dark moon a facet called Amavasya. Chandra Dashan is very well notified-elaborated in the Hindu calendar (available print + electronically). There is very limited time that this viewing takes place. Most devotees break their Vrat (fasting) after the viewing. Please reference lower-below table-content for the dates-time schedule for 2018.
In Vedic Astrology, Chandra is one of the nine highest significant-valued of the aspects, planets and celestial bodies. Though it is the Earth’s moon, it is given the status-importance of a star (called Tara in Sanskrit/Hindi). In ancient times, Chandra is said to have married the 27 daughters of King Daksha, therefore the 27 Nakshatra (constellations). The nine Grehs being – Surya (sun), Chandra (moon), Mangal (Mars), Shukr (Venus), Budh (Mercury), Brahaspati (Jupiter), Shani (Saturn), Rahu and Ketu.
Per Vedic Astrology, moon’s friends are the Sun (Surya) and Mercury (Budh). It has no enemies-opponents as such.
The first historic human to step foot on the moon was in 1969, Mr. Neil Armstrong (US), aboard Apollo 11. However, the first unmanned spacecraft moon landing was in 1959. There have been several other space missions to the moon. India’s 2nd exploration - Chandrayaan 2 by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) is expected in 2018 and as per schedule indicated by ISRO Chairman Mr. A. S. Kiran Kumar earlier. In the word Chandrayaan, ‘Chandra’ part is the moon and ‘Yaan’ means vehicle.
Chandra (moon) is approximately ¼ (~one-forth) the size of Earth (~27%). It is approximately 3.8 lac kms from Earth. Chandra takes ~27.3 days to rotate once around the Earth. Some of the famous personalities with name Chandra are Mr. Subhash Chandra Bose (India Freedom Fighter), Mr. Chandra Shekhar (ex India Prime Minister), Ms. Chandra Wilson (US Actress), Mr. Subhash Chandra (India Media baron, news channel ZEE TV, Chairman Essel Group etc).
